I'm so sorry to hear this. I will email Dr. Jay Harness, right now and ask him what books he would recommend for your mother in law. I'll get back with you as soon as I hear from him. He is very responsive.
Francine, he's the President of The American Society of Breast Cancer Surgeons. He serves on our medical advisory board.
I'll be back in touch. Such a great question for you to ask. I'm sure there are lot's of women out there who want to read as much information as they can, about their diagnosis.
If you tell me where she lives. I can also ask him what breast cancer surgeon he would recommend for her. Great doctors, know the other great doctors. That's one thing I've learned with creating this site. And they're not afraid to share this information.
More to come.....
Take care,
Michelle

Francine, I'm sorry to hear about this. I have posed the question to women who have breast cancer and to writers and doctors for their recommendations. Will keep you posted on what I find out.
Here are some books that my friend Martha recommended. She is a breast cancer survivor and a patient advocate. She's given you a few more tips as well.
Here are two books that she said helped her....
You Will Need to Get to Know Me
The Power of Conversation
Here are some additional tips for your daughter's mother in law....
Fabulous loving friends got me through and I am the one who will tell you that Laughter is the best Medicine.
I was given The gift of talking and lecturing to others...
These are all great tips for anyone faced with a health issue.
Best,
M

Thank you VERY much! I have been on the EmpowHer website for the last 30 minutes and already forwarded to my mother the link below. I cannot believe how useful this website can be. I bought her $200 of books from Amazon today and probably we will learn more about breast cancer just by reading/listening to Dr. Harness on your website.
I really appreciate it and I'm sure my mother will appreciate it even more.

You may also try Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book or Jessica Queller's "Pretty is What Changes". For something different, Queller recommends "Cancer Vixen."
Here's how the intro from Random House reads ...
“What happens when a shoe-crazy, lipstick-obsessed, wine-swilling, pasta-slurping, fashion-fanatic, single-forever, about-to-get-married big-city girl cartoonist with a fabulous life finds . . . a lump in her breast?” That’s the question that sets this powerful, funny, and poignant graphic memoir in motion. In vivid color and with a taboo-breaking sense of humor, Marisa Acocella Marchetto tells the story of her eleven-month, ultimately triumphant bout with breast cancer—from diagnosis to cure, and every challenging step in between.
Francine, I hope your daughter's mother-in-law writes her own triumphant novel.
Have her do a search at Barnes & Noble. Dr. Susan Love's book on breast cancer is probably the best know. The American Cancer Society has lots of materials. The best web site is www.breastcancer.org . Hope that helps.

I'm a cancer information specialist and the book that I've used often in my library recommendations (and given to more than one friend with this diagnosis) is Be A Survivor:Your Guide to Breast Cancer Treatment, by Vladimir Lange, M.D. It's available on Amazon.com.
You can see excerpts from this book and other resources for breast cancer at this site: http://patientresourcecenter.com. Just go to the Breast Cancer section of Cancer Sites and you can check it out.
