Monogamy: Nature or Nurture?

Topics: DNA, genes, monogamy, voles

Just read an article about a researcher who claims that monogamy/bonding may be in the genes.

"We were actually able to take the gene from the prairie vole (small, furry rodents that have underground burrows) and inject it into the brain of the meadow vole, which normally should not form bonds," said researcher Larry Young at Emory University. "And when we did that, the meadow voles were actually able to form an attachment to their mate."

What do you think? Is bonding innate, learned, otherwise?

Is it safe to eat eggs, no matter how they are cooked?

With all the talk about eating raw foods and their safety, I started wondering about the eggs I eat in the morning (either at home or in a restaurant).

I never thought of this, but the eggs can be considered partially raw, if they are "sunny side up" (yoke runny), right?

Is it safe to eat this type of egg, or do they need to be fully cooked ("over easy") or even scrambled?

Lifetime of being in an arranged marriage EASIER than wearing a condom for a few moments?

I can not figure this out, and would love your thoughts!

I just read this story on Nigeria arranging marriages based on positive HIV-status. Basically, to stop the spread of HIV, the solution is to pair HIV-positive couples together (they can say "no" to a potential mate), in hopes they will no longer spread HIV to others.

Health experts are saying this is a bad idea, for so many reasons. The solution they seek is: wear condoms when having sex!

What do you think about the study that dispels link between Autism and MMR vaccine?

In the news today is an announcement from researchers who say that there is absolutely no correlation between Autism and the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. This is pretty huge in the Autism world, considering there are so many parents and parent advocates out there who believe otherwise.

Are there OB/GYN's who specialize in treating girls 13-16?

My daughter has been having pains in her side which we suspect may be connected to her Ovulation. She is 13 and has been menstruating for about a year now. We took her to our Pediatrician but I don't feel confident they are well versed in this area to treat her.

What is the best way to dispose of expired prescription drugs?

I am cleaning out my medicine cabinet and drawers and want to know the best way to get rid of my expired prescription drugs. With the drugs in the water story from a few months back, I don't think dumping them in the water system is the best way to go. But putting them in the garbage doesn't seem that safe either. Any one know of the best way to go about this?

I have had my thyroid and hormones tested, but did not ask to have the free hormones tested. I have had surgery to fix deviated septum and used a cpap machine for mild sleep apnea. cpap machine made me more tired.

How do I know when I should use a heating pad on an injury vs. a cold pack? Do they do the same thing? Is heat better than ice for some injuries? Thanks.
